Clear Braces

How are clear braces different from metal ones?

Besides the obvious — the fact that clear braces are nearly invisible and metal braces are visually prominent — there are some other differences, such as:

  • Brackets: The brackets are larger than standard metal brackets.
  • Fragility: Ceramic brackets are more delicate than metal ones and are therefore usually used on the top row of teeth only.
  • Care: Ceramic braces may take longer to brush around.
  • Cost: Ceramic braces may cost more than metal ones.

Because clear braces are more challenging, less sturdy, and possibly more costly than metal ones, they're most often used for older teens and adults with cosmetic concerns.

How long do I need to wear clear braces?

Treatment time for clear braces is usually about the same as with other types of braces. While most patients wear clear braces for around 22 months on average, it can take 6-30 months.

Do clear braces require any special care?

Because clear ceramic brackets get stained more easily than metal ones, you need to take precautions. You should be careful about exposure to dark-colored beverages like coffee, tea, and soda. If possible, limit your consumption of these beverages, or use a straw to drink them whenever possible.

When you brush your teeth, take a little extra time to make sure you fully clean all around the brackets. The larger brackets can leave many hiding places for food particles.

How do clear braces compare to Invisalign?

While the goal of clear braces is the same as Invisalign® — straighten teeth in as invisible a manner as possible — Invisalign may be a bit less obvious than clear braces. The clear ceramic brackets create an uneven tooth surface, while the Invisalign aligners allow for a smooth surface.

Which option is best for you will depend on your personal habits and lifestyle. If you want a teeth-straightening system that is removable, Invisalign might be the best choice for you. However, if you prefer not to worry about switching out aligners, clear braces might be your best bet.
