Advanced Laser Dentistry at Tysons West Orthodontics and Children’s Dentistry

Laser dentistry is a modern approach we use at Tysons West Orthodontics and Children’s Dentistry to treat various conditions affecting the lips, gums, tongue, lips and other soft tissues in the mouth.

What Is Laser Dentistry?

Laser dentistry involves using lasers in dental treatments as an alternative to traditional drills or tools. This method allows for greater precision, efficiency, and a more comfortable experience for the patient. It also enables our specialists to take a more conservative approach to adults and children treatment for certain conditions.

Conditions Treated with Laser Dentistry

We use laser dentistry for several conditions affecting adults and children alike including:

  • Tongue Tie - Lasers offer a more efficient and precise treatment for tongue ties, which can cause difficulties with breastfeeding and speech development in infants and children. The less invasive approach results in faster healing and reduced discomfort.
  • Frenectomy - For children with a thick muscle or tissue attaching the lip to the gumline (lip tie), laser dentistry provides a much-preferred alternative to traditional scalpels for correcting this condition, which can impact the spacing of the front teeth.
  • Oral Pathology - Gentle and effective treatment for removal of fibromas, ulcers, canker sores, and cold sores.

Laser Dentistry in Orthodontics

Laser is also used for orthodontic purposes:

  • Gingivectomy or gingival recontouring: to correct the gum border contours after braces
  • Laser exposure of impacted teeth: permit uncovering of the tooth that failed to erupt and the placement of an attachment on the tooth to bring it into proper position.

Benefits of Laser Dentistry

When appropriate, laser dentistry offers several benefits over other treatment methods:

  • Promotes blood clotting and minimizes bleeding during soft tissue treatments.
  • Some laser treatments do not require anesthesia.
  • Sterilizes the treatment area, reducing the risk of bacterial infection (faster healing)
  • Reduced pain and swelling during and after laser.
